Default 1970 Vette LT1 - Question

Hey guys..I am looking a LT1 1970 I think. Why I say I think is that the VIN doesn't seem right with what I am reading. The VIN does not have a Z in it which I think it should to let you know that it is a LT1. Is this true for the 1970 LT1's. Thanks

There is nothing in the 1970 VIN to indicate which engine option was on the car. That didn't start until 1972. You'll have to rely on the traditional methods to decide if it was an LT-1 car originally.

If the original engine is there, then the VIN and suffix codes should tell you. If the original motor isn't there, you'll have to use the usual clues like tach redline, fuel line configuration, rear diff side yokes, sway bar, TI ignition, and others. Sorry, but I am not very familiar with LT-1's so I can't give many specifics on what clues to look for. I do know that an LT-1 car couldn't have A/C in 1970, and it couldn't have an auto tranny either. It would have had a 6500 (?) rpm redline and a single metal fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump. Others will hav eto chime in with more details.

No Z--should have a CTK,CTU at the end--should have a 6500 RPM tach(a little tougher to change out) there should be no fuel line return, solid lifters which are easily heard, of course it should have the 350/370 horse on the console(easy to change) the hood badging--absolutely no power steering--780 cfm Holley carb---I believe the number should be 4555 also 4555A was the replacement--exhaust should be 2 1/2 vs 2" the early 1970's had a 6 quart oil pan--one reason why no power steering--Transister Ignition(the amplifier box is up under the front drivers side fender) look between the hood and the front nose with the hood open is easiest to see) the original alternator should be 1100884(very hard item to find or replace).

Can go over more stuff if you are interested---nice cars--just remember the LT-1 is ALL about the motor---without the correct motor--its just another Corvette 350 and the price would adjust accordingly.
