Default Whats a good header?

We are planning the exhaust on the 77 and wanted to check in with guys who have headers. I am debating between long tube and shorties yet. What do you guys recomend.

I am worried about fit. I have seen some headers that get in the way of oil dipstick tube etc.. What is a good long tube or shorty that will fit easily? The rest of the exhaust i am probably going to have made at a local shop.

Any one have part numbers etc, that would be helpful. Thanks

I installed Heddmen headers on my 79. Long tube version. Bought them thru JET HOT. Install was rather easy, from the bottom. I believe
there has been numerous discussions on this topic, try searching on headers.

I installed headmans 12-14 years ago and they fit well and I have not had a problem.

I've got Hookers on mine. Put 'em in when the engine was rebuilt, so I didn't have to worry about much. Haven't had a problem with them thus far.

I went with the Holley Flowtech headers. No problems so far. Like other long tube headers, they have to be installed from under the car. Most manufactures have specific part numbers for headers for certain model cars to ensure proper fitment.

I agree. I have the ceramic coated ones. They are easy to install once your manifolds are off. My feet are cooler now because of them! If you're planning a high HP motor, you might want to look for 1 7/8" or 1 3/4" primaries. I don't know if Dynomax makes them, mine are only 1" 5/8" which is fine for my L48.

Glad you started the thread. I have the same question. But, with the price difference between painted steel headers with something like the self-branded headers from Summit or Jegs for about $90 vs the Ceramic coated headers from Flowtech or Dynomax starting at about $230, the question is there really a benefit to using ceramic coated headers vs the painted steel headers? A $140 benefit, if you know what I mean.

Benefit.....definitely YES. The cheaper painted ones will wear out (rust through) in a relatively short period of time causing constant re-purchasing of headers.......the ceramic or jet-hot coated headers last a lifetime.

Rust thru even if the car doesnt run in anything but sunny weather?

Also, does anybody have headers that dont have dual exhaust? Right now I have 2-1-2 without the cat. Kind of defeats the purpose of having headers if you dont have true duals?
Thanks in advance.

I've never seen an old set of painted headers that weren't rusty.
My car has Dynomax headers with 2-1-2 exhaust and a high flow cat. It may not be as good as true duals, but it's certainly better than stock.

To be frankly honest, I DON'T like any of the heders offered for our Vettes. I have Hooker Super Comps on my LT-1, they act as oil pan protection because they are about an inch too low for the Vette. Side pipes have too long of a primary pipe and don't go over well with the wife/girlfriend the first time she gets out of the Vette and burns her leg on them (besides the conbstant drone in your head when going down the freeway, and the problems associated with jacking the Vette up after installation.) I am planning on building my own headers for my next motor.

Thanks in.[/QUO advanceTE] Yes....rusts regardless of weather....& no amount of paint helps.

the headers i've got were on the 79 when i got it. i can't see a manufacturers name on them anywhere. is there any "easy" way to tell whose headers they are (and model number??)?

also, the header bolts are a "P A I N" to get a wrench on. no room between bolt and header pipe coming out of the exhaust port. any "trick" on this?? what about using internal hex head bolts. seems like it would be a lot easier. any down side to this?

Steve, could you give some more info onthe Hooker Sides?
I'm sorta interested in them.....how loud, ease of install, are there 3 pieces to each side, etc.?
