Sign Paint - Can I remove it?
Hey guys - not sure if anyone has had any experience with this, but figured I'd try....
My 72 was repainted Bryar Blue about 15 years ago by a previous owner and she still looks great. The guy I bought it from had the words "Time Bandits" done in script in a light red color across the back above the Corvette lettering (it's about the same width as the Corvette lettering and not too high). He said it was done in sign paint and was told it could be removed. Does anyone out there have experience with this and is it something I could do without killing the paint job underneath?
Just for grins, I dipped a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and rubbed a tiny spot and it did stain the q-tip pink, but didn't make much of a dent in the writing. When you look up close you can tell it's sitting above the clear coat and was done after the fact - just not sure if and how it can be removed safely.
Thanks!

My brother in law owns a Fast signs. When he relettered my van they used oven cleaner to remove sign paint. It had been on for many years and took off the sign paint but didnt touch the body paint. Now since you have no idea what kind of paint job was done I wouldnt just go spraying it all over your vette. Try it on a test spot first. Maybe behind rocker moulding or underside of door.

Thanks for the advice and contacts everyone! I appreciate it.
LOTAHP - sent you a PM
Bobs77Vette - Thanks and I PM'ed signguy
Pizzen - Oven cleaner? Definitely not something I would have thought of as it sounds harsh, but I can always try the spot check like you said.
BsiegePaint - Excuse the ignorance - what's a clay bar?
Thanks!

I've removed lettering from race cars and others with the removal being accomplished as described above, but never losing the ghost of the letters. The lettered area color will never blend with the rest of the panel. I've wet sanded and buffed and it's still there. jim

The TIME BANDITS pinstriping has been on your Vette for more than 15 years. The paint might be darker underneath the pinstriping.
Usually a "cleaner" wax will remove pinstriping or mineral spirits. A clay bar will NOT remove the striping easily. But a ZAINO "yellow" clay bar will do wonders for your entire car (then #2, then #5).
