Default Engine Number discrepancy?

My 1971 engine Ser # or code on the front of the block does not match my Serial number- however, both the back of the block(behind Manifold) and both Heads match- Why would serial numbers on the front of the block be different that the on on the rear?

the back of the block is the engine casting code, the one on the front should reflect at least part of your serial #the head casting numbers are just that, not specific to that car, as is the back block number. the front passenger side # is the important one.
the others being correct indicates a correct period motor.

Thousands of engines have the same casting numbers (rear) as yours.

As others have said, the block casting number is located on the rear drivers side bellhousing flange. The other number you want to find is the block casting date, which is located on the passengers side---rear of the block---up near the distributor.

You'll find a series of numbers, A 2 8, for example. Jan. 2, 1968. Check the casting date and post it here. That will tell you when the block was cast. Chuck

Is there a site where "Matching Numbers" is explained?
I am new to this and would like to document my 1972.
