ok ........ #$^#@$ brakes are gravity bleeding again and while waiting I thought I would tackle the non-functioning horn.
Disassembled the horn unit and found that the little metal thing with spring was out of it's holder. took screwdriver and checked that contact from horn hole to ground made horn work ........ put back together and cannot make work ...... whatam I missing ??????
going to work on never functioning headlights while I wait for a reply .... Thanks

this is from memory....the long spring has a copper contact in the bottom of it... this rides on the retainer clip that the horn button pushes into....i think there is 3 screws that hold that down....and then the horn button pops into that....when you push the horn button down it grounds the circuit and makes the relay send power to the horn. were the horns ever functional
yes, horn worked up to 3 months or so ago ...... time for inspection sticker next month, today actually ...... long spring is copper color and has an aluminum looking rod that slides inside which it appears makes contact with an isolated metal ring. when horn button pushed, iso ring should make contact with ground ..... not doing it ..... don't know why .... chilton's doesn't show squat ........
is there another spring in there other than the long plunger one??

no ..... do you hear a clicking by the fuse panel when you do this? signaling that the circuit is complete....if so that means the horns are not getting power or that the ground at the horn end isn't working....did you check the fuse..
horns work when screwdriver is grounded between shiny plunger thingy on column and the column ....... I htink I found problem ........ apparently the horn cover HOLDER (clampy thing) and the iso ring are supposed to be one piece (not 3 ) held together by 3 plastic rivets .... the heads are gone ... headed to auto parts house to find .......
kinda ........
the brakes are great now ........ but they were great last time I bled them (about 2 months ago) so we'll see how long this lasts .... as for the HORN ...... parts house did not have the plastic rivets BUT they had a catalog that showed them they will order (I hope) ..... my alter ego bubba came by and "showed me the way" for now ...... some 1" foam a/c duct sticky tape under the whole she-bang and the horn button clamped on one side only will allow horn to work for inspection, until a proper plastic fix ........

oh, and the headlights are working also ...... done this before (dissasemble vacuum switches, soak in brake fluid (I have plenty) put back together), lasts about a month ....... get-r-dun
