Default 72 Shoulder Harness Help Needed

I have been reduing a 72 coupe and have replaced almost everything inside it. I put new covers on the seats which are vinyl. Is there an easy way to get the belts back through the seat backs? Had a hard time taking them out. I hate to try to force them back through but don't think the stopper will come off the end of the belt?

Can't wait to hear the answer to this question...

I am going to replace the plastic cover on the wheel well and can't figure out how to get the shoulder belt out of the seat back.

I believe all you have to do is to remove the belt "chart". It is the plastic piece that keeps the belt from retracting through the seat back. Easiest way to remove it is with a hair dryer / heat gun. Heat it up, when it get pliable slip it of, slip the belt through the seat, slip it back on, and let it cool.

This is what I did. I heated mine up with heat gun and it slipped right through.

Hi Fred

I thought maybe that would work but was not sure. Were you able to use the same ones over again?

To tell you the truth I just did a recover on my 73' Coupe seats early last month. The one thing I haven't done as of yet is to slit the back of the seat and put the belt back through again. To many things have gotten in the way. I don't see any problem with using them again. The vinyl gets pretty soft with a little heat applied and will slip right through the back of the seat once again. You won't have any problems reusing them. I bet the vinyl gets just as soft on a hot summer day in the car.

hi I have new vinyl seat covers withe the slot trim on the front but not on the back, I can feel the slot trim on the back through the seat cover scared to cut the slot without some back up from someone who has done it before. Is there a plastic trim that covers the slot so it doesnt get torn by the belt.

You should really start a new thread rather than opening up a really old one
But to answer your question
There is a bezel on the outside

It is screwed to a guide on the inside, make sure you feel that, it's only on the one side where the belt would go

Both sides of the seats are interchangeable (drive pass) so that inside guide part can be moved, inside is the bit that is on both sides

thank you for that info mooser👍It seems that whoever fitted the cover put it over the trim as they were not using the slots for shoulder belts ? I wonder if I could cut a slit in the cover and carefully extract the trim piece and refit it on the outside of the cover ? Then I would have the slot ready to receive the new shoulder belts. Just trying to avoid removing the whole seat cover as sounds a bit daunting 😩

I slide the rubber cover off the chrome toward the license plate, then hook TWO plastic wire ties attached to the chrome “buckle” to pull it through the hole in the seat. I will admit that removing the screws on the REAR Bezel seems like an easier approach than messing with the rubber cover.

I don't think you could slip the bezel out of a slit in the cover, it's too large to maneuver through the slit. Also I'd make really sure what you feel is the bezel and not the guide, they are basically the same shape as I show there.
If it's just the guide then no problem, buy a set of bezels, cut the slot and screw them on

if the bezel is inside (double triple check, seems weird)
Cut the slot and make two small holes where the screws are and remove the screws, you might be able to maneuver the bezel around to come out the slot and then you can put it back on and feed the belts as detailed above
If you can't get the bezels out for some reason you'll have to go in a bit
Take the back cover off the seat (plastic part) and the tilt button then you can unfold the cover where it meets in the middle, it's two pieces of plastic that just hook over each other sideways and are held with the button trim and back plate.
you should be able to fold it open enough to get at the bezels out, then re-attach everything and move forward
