I think I read somewhere that the Sting Ray badging from the C2s was not put on the 68 vette, but made its return in '69. As far as I'm concerned the 68 is a Stingray, but it could be an interesting discussion...
The only reason the name wasn't on the 68 was because they felt the body was SOOO different from the 63-67 real sting rays that it shouldn't wear the badge....BUT people pissed and moaned over them taking it off so they put it back on it 69 thats the whole story right there I saw a vette show on tv that said that...it's justa badge.
yes the 68 is a stringray the magazines back in the day telling about the all new 68 call it a stingray even...it has gills like a ray don't it!
there are new people joining this forum all the time so you have to expect for past questions like this one to pop up now and again. it might have been discussed befor but some of the people on here might have missed the post or might not have been on long enough and might have something interesting to add. just my .02
But...does it really matter if the '68 is/is not a Stingray?
No, and that is precisely the dead horse that takes such a beating about every two months or so. Well, actually, the question will in July will be phrased: "Is the '77 really a Stingray?"
HELL NO!
Show me a factory 68 with a "stink ray" emblem. And yes it matters. Thats whats great about a 68, it isn`t any GD fish, it`s pure unadulterated Vette "Baby" with gobs of HP.

I love this discussion!! And then we accuse so-called "NCRS types" of being ****!!???
In a nutshell:
1. 67 and (which?) previous years were called and badged, "Sting Ray" written as 2 words.
2. Print advertisements for the then-new 1968 corvette spcecifcally referred to it as the "corvette sting ray", so GM marketing was confused, mistaken or both.
3. The 1968 itself had no Sting Ray or Stingray badging.
4. The 1969 vette with a body nearly identical to the 68, had a Stingray (one word) badge on the side.
So, you decide!!
I don't really care if it is or it isn't, but I sure won't mar my body with a funky "badge" which would make me look like a 69 wannabe.

I was think about putting a Stingray badge on my 1980, just so the general public will stop asking if my car is a stingray, and then having to explain why it is not

Bonehead: What year is that?
TallBoy: It's an '80.
Bonehead: Is it a StingRay?
TallBoy: Nope...just a regular Vette.
Bonehead: (with an up-turned nose and a slight look of disgust). Oh. I thought so.
