always a story / Ignition Switch
sorry I should of put this on tech C3
well there is always a story eh !!
I blew the engine in this car and replaced it. When I was replacing it I bought a new starter. So this year I've completed all the jobs and go to start the car ... the starter is making some real nasty noises ... sometimes it would turn over fine, other time it would turn over very slowly and then other times it would make a horrible noise. ahhh starter miss aligned so I placed some shims and no change to the above. No the starter is shot ..take the Starter out do a quick look inside .. ah good, no parts fell out .. bench test , and the starter works fine. So this leads me to my problem, my ignition switch must be shot ? I put the starter back in the car and wired up an mechanics starter switch ... no starter problem, everything works great.
Is it a hard job to take the ignition switch off the steering column ?
Is the Ignition switch fixable or should I buy a new one ?
If it's fixable what needs to be done.
thanks

The ignition switch is not THAT hard to replace. I am assuming you have a 74, as do I. I did this a couple weeks ago.
You will need to drop the steering column (3 bolts connected to firewall, 2 connected under dash) and disconnect the rag joint. Pull the column down and forward so you can get to the switch.
The switch comes with adequate instructions, just follow them. Also, a shop manual is a nice addition.
As far as where to get one? NAPA has them for $11.
