See what kind of harmonic damper he has. Some 283's have a thin crappy thing that is pressed on and no center retaining bolt.
If you could see the crankshaft flange on the rear it would be round for a 283. The 327 has a pair of notches.
The casting number on the rear of the block will tell you too.
-Mark.

the easy way to tell between a 327 and 350 are were the PCV valve is. if it is in the valve cover it is a 350. if it is behind the carb. it is a 327 or 283. also 327 and 283 had the oil fill tube in front of the motor

Let me throw in my 2 cents. As far as the markings go on the heads, there's no guarantee things haven't been changed along the way. I see no reason why the engine could be a 265 instead of a 283 or 327. Has anyone considered that? I actually had double humps on a 265 years ago. Since the man is dealing with a 55 year old truck, anything is possible. Heck it might even have a 302, 305, 350 or 400 that has some old valve covers, intake, and heads thrown on it.
I think the only way to know is going to be get the numbers and search that out.

Carl:
I may be a little lost here. 265, 283, and 327 engines had the oil fill in the front. As I mentioned above, and old intake (one with the oil fill in the front) could have been put on a newer/bigger small block engine.
