Default a law question

This is about parking lots. If you are in an empty parking lot. Can you get in ticket for locking the breaks, aggressive turns and soforth.(maby a donut at the end ) When I first got my motorcycle I did these things, for all the what ifs, and to simply get the overall feel of it. Just the car will make alot more noise and draw attention. I hope that this is not too dumb of a question

Yes, you can!!

I was just given advice to "break-in" new drag radials to do a 7 sec burnout and then let them sit for 24 hours.... so I was wondering the same thing and actually thought I might call the police and ask them if it would be ok if I did a 7 sec burnout somewhere... yeah... right... haven't asked yet.

I would say, in a word, yes. You'd probably get a ticket. It would depend on whether it was private property and if you had the owner's permission.
I remember, while working at a grocery as a kid, asking the owner if I could do donuts in the snow after closing in my old '69 Mach 1. He said OK, so several of us were out there ripping it up. (I wish they had a place for that nowadays, it's a good way to learn how to drive in snow and the lessons learned have saved by butt many times) Anyway, I'm out raising nine kinds of hell and all of a sudden, my "friends" scatter and disappear. It looked like roaches when you turn on the light. I look over and here comes the blue lights. I told him that I work here and have the owners permission. He said OK and commented on what a nice job I'd done to the car, it was then that I recognized him as the guy who had sold it to me. So I start to drive away and here he comes again. I had been working so hard to fix the car up that I'd forgotten to renew the plates, so I got a ticket anyway.

I would say DEFINITELY yes. The owner of the business can get you for endangering his customers or trespassing (if the store is closed) and the police would nail you for disturbing the peace and reckless driving.
Find yourself a race track nearby and do that stuff legally. Much safer and you don't have to worry about tickets.

I worry when I'm just doing low speed figure-8s when I replace the differential fluid. I think an autocross course is a good place to get a feel for your car.

It may depend on what state you live in.
Get this one. My brother and his friend had a flat tire in the friends car. The other guy was out changing the tire. The car was up on a jack with the wheel off. My brother got a ticket for operating a vehicle without a license. Go figure!

This may go without saying, but I always see signs in parking lots that read, "Police Have Jurisdiction Over This Lot". Usually a decent gauge in determining what not to do is: What would your Mama say? Course my mom always drove a Vette or a Camaro, and my grandmother drove a fastback Mustang.

I tried the "snow donuts" in an empty parking lot near my house to teach my boys how to drive in snow and we were chased of by the security personnel. Said it was against the law to do that.

Some states give the authority for citations on private property. Others require the owner to post it before the police have authority.

Traffic laws vary by state, so you would have to look up the laws in your state. But here is an example of a local law that covers this, notice that it says "within the limits of the City" and not just on public roadways.

7.02.09 Exhibition Driving. Any person who drives any vehicle within the limits of the City in such a manner that creates or causes unnecessary engine noise, tire squeal, skid or slide upon acceleration or stopping; or that simulates a temporary race, or that causes the vehicle to unnecessarily turn abruptly or away, shall be guilty of exhibition driving.

Yep...you can pretty much figure there is a law SOMEWHERE on every jurisdiction's books to cover that type of driving. If there isn't, they'll bend one to get it to fit.

Well they say the more experience the better. I guess I can still do the occasional "I don't think anyone is looking thing"

I guess that probably every state has a catch 22 law like this one that pretty much covers everything. I guess that I will start looking into the autocross stuff.
