Recently bought a 71 war bonnet coupe 454, 4 speed. I was given several awards with the car(Bloomington Gold,NCRS Top Flight,Triple Crown etc.). I'm reviewing the judging sheets in order to correct any incorrect items, not many it's a 97% original car! The side vents where mentioned as paint missing. Has anyone seen an original, without body color on the outer most crome edge from the factory? Also looking for an original air filter and correct part #? Thanks
my '72 is all original, also WBY, and yes, from the factory, the side vents did not have paint on the outside edge - or on the sides of that 'ridge'. I can email some pics if you like...
It sounds like yours are painted...you might be able to very carefully scrape off those three edges ... there is a smooth chrome under it, so the paint may not be bonded to well ...
I thought this was stock in 70 and the chrome showed in 71/72. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. There is chrome under the paint as I had a peek but I believe it is supposed to be painted.
Id like to know whether the chrome edges should be present on the 70 side vents also? My vette was repainted by the previous owner (not a pro job) and so the vents were repainted also.
I thought the chrome should be on all 70, 71, 72 vents.
They are painted completely on my 70 as well. Wish I could get that nice little chrome lip. I dont feel like trying to remove paint, then screwing it all up, I have a tendancy to do these things. My philosophy now is, "if it aint broke, leave it the F alone".
On a 1970 vette the side vents are painted differently than the 71 and 72s. The 71 and 72s have raised lips on all the chrome survaces. Every line is chrome. On a 70 all horizontal lines are chrome and only the first vertical one is chrome. All the chrome ones are raised, but the other vertical ones are painted and not raised. The whole vent really is a slightly different cast than 71 and 72.

I was thinking the same thing last night....I thought "hmm, maybe I can take the paint off the edge leaving the chrome edge.... wonder if it would work..."
Yeah right! I have a tendancy to F things up...I think Im going to leave mine alone too!

I knew the 70 was different but I did not know exactly what it was. When I had my car painted I asked the guy if he knew the correct lines to mask off and he said yes. When I got the car back, all the edges were cleaned and shining. It looked good so I did not say anything. I told him I thought the chrome lip around the edge was correct and that each horizontal should have been chromed. Oh well, I told him I was happy with it and not to worry about it. Like I said I wasn't so sure what was correct and it doesn't really take away from the car.
