Default [vin] Wtf???

Bought an 80 from a guy in California. Everything is legit. Clear title. etc.
Someone over in C4gen posted carfax 'til the end of the month, so I figure what the hell, I'll run it. He sends me a PM saying it comes back as not a valid number!?!

Any ideas?

1Z878AS400541

I have put a light up to it, and this IS the VIN.

Too old for a Carfax check. Newer cars only.

Carfax works on the newer 17 digit VIN's. Won't work/no data for older VIN's with less than 17 characters. Chuck

Well that can be interpreted two ways but it is a valid Corvette VIN. It suggests a Sep 79 built Corvette for the 1980 model year...it's just that Carfax doesn't recognize it as CG indicates.

Another neat thing about your VIN is the last FIVE digits of your VIN. 00541 is the production sequence of your car, meaning it is #00541 out of 40,614 1980 Corvettes built that year. I believe they were making about 170 cars per day then, so your car is probably a "third" or "fourth" day production car-a very, very "early" car.

I think the VINs changed in 84 to 17 characters and CARFAX looks for 17.
