It's on there TIGHT. I strained a muscle getting mine to unscrew. The threads looked a little rusty once I got it unscrewed. I wonder if the factory put a form of locktite on there?

Default New shift boot and **** !

I bought a new black chrome ball for my 80 shifter and it looks great. I also finished it off with one of those soft leather shift boots from overseas that advertise on the forum. Brent

I think the craftsman tool would work. I'll probabaly get flamed for this but i used either cardboard or a hand towel and a pair of vise grips. It worked for me. It's been a long time since i did this but i think the silver button had to come off first.

I had problems taking the shift **** off of my 72.

I wrapped a rag around the silver button, and used a pair of vise grips with it just tight enough to grab the button, without denting it. That was the only way I could get it off.

Once the silver button was off, the shifter ball unscrewed all the way off.

On a '78 the silver button is screwed on. To release it I took a pair of RoboGrips with the rubber protect tips and was able to unscrew. Once you get that off the knwo will unscrew.
