Looks like it's time for me to take the "Money Pit" from St Louis to the Norfolk area and I can tell you I'm more than a little nervous. Looks like my route takes me by Louisville KY, Frankfort KY, Charleston WV, and then down towards Lexington and past Richmond. It says 878.3 miles and 14 Hours. Ya'll think that's realistic.
Car runs pretty good...but....talk me into/out of this...
Are you going to Langley AFB???? I'm in the Army at FT. Eustis, I'm still over at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait and will not be back until Sept. this year. From your pics. it looks like you were already here, so take the trip how bad could it get when you have already been to hell .
Later, 69 day left in country!!!

I'm a retiree..so no.. not really, even though I'm sure I'll use some of Langley's faciities. Yeah, I spent 7 months in Baghdad as a contractor after I retired. After surviving 22 years in the USAF, I don't know what possessed me... Anyway, I hadn't thought about it in those terms. When you get back you'll have to look me up and we can swap war stories. I got to go to all the "vacation spots" in my career.
Thanks for all you do !

I love being able to add that (Ret) thing
P.S. I'm pm'ing you a link to some pics of my time there.
Good luck on the drive. My wife and I are thinking of starting our own business in Western NC. If we do, I'll drive the vette down before we move to save on the cost of moving. It's about 750-800 miles. I know I will be nervous about the car breaking down in the middle of nowhere. But on the other hand I could put the top down, crank the music and listen to the engine running at 3000 rpm at 70 mph for 12 hours.
Wife and I took a 7000 mile road trip:San Diego-South Boston,Va and back.(2002)..only issue was a blown power steering hose 17 miles east of Yuma,Az. Rest of trip was a blast..visited Bowling Green in a down pour...78 L-82 with 100.000 original miles and one glued on temp gage...
Have 120,000 now......go for it...
RET. also....

Hey portdawg, I know your car, and I don't think I would hesitate driving her. You say she doesn't run hot, has new rear suspension parts, TA's, bearings etc. I know it has had one hell of a valve spring adjustment so just keep your cell phone with you and your tool box for anything unexpected. Keep a quart of motor oil, a quart of PS fluid and one of transmission fluid and hit the road - t-tops off of course. But then again your AC works.....
If you truely have a doubt in your mind you could get a flatbed car hauler and pull it behind your F-150. Your wife will be driving the VW. Then you'll have all your vehicles.
If you were leaving after the 7th, I could see you one last time at the LGCC club meeting.

You forget..I've got the horse trailer and utility trailer...can't leave those behind...even thoughhhhhh.....naah, she'd kill me...
Just do it! Take along a few tools and supplies as mentioned, your cell phone and a AAA or similar card and go! After it's over you will have a great memory and story to tell!
I recently made the move from Ohio to NJ. Its a seven hour drive. I was too chicken to breakdown somewhere in the middle of nowhere on I80 so I had a car transporter move it for me. Cost was $500.
Jim, you should be fine. I have driven that route a couple of times to visit family in Warrenton Va. You probably will want to check your thermostat and take a little coolant along as well just be to on the safe side. An extra pair of hoses would be good planning as well.
Good luck
We will all miss you here in the Shark Pond AKA STL C3 SHARKS.
Jim, good luck with your new job. Sorry you are leaving the area and the St. Louis C3 Sharks.
If your car is anything like mine, you will only start to hear strange noises coming from it as you get farther from home. They do this to you just to raise your stress level and so you will appreciate them more when you finally get to your destination.
When I bought my 73, I drove it back from Knoxville TN. , 958 miles to Houston. Just did the check up on it before I bought it, so did not know what to expect driving it back so far. Made it back without any problems, and enjoyed the cruise. Enjoy yourself and carry a cell phone just in case.
How many miles are on the car? If it's over 100k then I would just replace things for peace of mind before the trip (especially if your looking at $500 or so to ship it) like ....all the hoses and belts, battery....might even consider the alt, water pump and u joint's if you need em' .....Then you'll have new what dies most often on trips....and you may have needed them anyway.......But it would be a good cruise just do it you most probably won't regret it....(but if something happens it was all your decision )
