Default Hookers just arrive, advice???

Just recived my Hooker headers and sidepipes for my 1970 convert with 350/350 and 4speed. Anyone have any advice and hints on what you discovered putting yours on. Haven't looked at directions yet. Not even sure at the moment whether you come from the top our up through bottom.

Thanks for any suggestions. They sure look great on the garage floor.

1st i'd loosen the manifolds u got on there, then jack up your car, i dunno maybe 3ft to 4 ft high, never measured but's it's high. then dismantle your old exhaust. clean your mating surface, then put 1 bolt on each end of your exhaust and hook your gskts on then put some tape on your new hooker headers where it might come in contact w/eng parts and try to fanaggle them in from the top, if that don't work do it from underneath. once the headers are in place, loosely, then coat the inside of the header where the sidepipe slips in w/anti seize and also on the side pipe, then slip on the sidepipe, mite take a little coaxing, then line up your brkts of the sidepipe to the slots in the frame, theres room for adjustment there, then put in the bolts and rubber grommets and tighten the bolts loosely. u want to put your rear tires on now if u took em off to make sure sidepipe don't hit em. if alls well then go tighten headers, then header sidepipe bolt, then sidepipe bolts and your done w/that. when u goto put the sidepanel on most likely you'll have to notch the sidepanel to clear the sidepipe bolts(i cut my sidepipe bolts down, they stuck out to far) and u might have to cut some of the sidepanel to clear header pipes. maybe a 4 or 5 hr job. then stand back and admire your work w/a big smile on yer face

- Go in from the bottom. There is no way to feed them from the top.
- Remove clutch linkage for clearance.
- Starter removal is optional.
- Hard to get the trim panels back on. Remove wheels and feed them in lengthwise.

Coming from the top or bottom is mostly a personal preference when trying to work hookers into place. Just go slow until you get the hang of things. Everything should just fall into place with a little bit of practice. Mine have never come with any directions though. Instincts and some imagination should help you figure it out though. As far as hints or tips, make sure to wear some good protection, they can sometimes be a little dirty if they are used. I find it useful to double bag on the extra filthy jobs just to make sure keep myself clean. Also, you usually get what you paid for... Just remember, have fun!

Default help

yoooooos guys are crazy, but also very helpful. I have one side up and simi attached. They went up easier from beneath, but I seem to have a problem right where the pipes come under the body.

the pipe touches the paint and fender, and I'm sure that can't be good, see photo. I appears that I would have to trim some of the body, and I'm not talking about what is under the trim rail. Any thoughts have I done something wrong.

Are both sides like that? That doesnt look right. My hookers never had that clearance issue. Here are some pics of how mine were when I bought the car.

Put the car back on the ground and check again. The chassis will flex when it's up in the air and can lead you to believe you have alignment problems/clearance issues you may not really have. Also, make sure the car is on the ground when you're fitting the side tubes. Same issue--it will look like there's no possible way to get the tabs anywhere close to the slots in the frame if it's up in the air. Put the car on the ground and they'll be a LOT closer.

Good luck.

I had the same problem with my 70BB. '68 and '69 models do not have the wheel flairs that the later cars have and therefore have less fittment issues.
I contacted holly/hooker regarding the fittment problem but they denied resposiblity even after sending me 3 sets of headers. I read here that holley was looking for a doner car a while back to correct the problem. I would call holley just to see if you have an old set.
My solution was to cut the headers up and add extensions to all tubes at the point where they turn out towards the collector to bring the collector out about 3/4". Weld the extensions and get them Jet Hot coated. This takes an huge amount of work and I would not recommend unless you are a good fabricator. Look up my previous post and let me know if I can help you.
