Default Header Install Question...

So I am thinking of getting new headers in the near future and I think most of the install seems pretty straight forward (including the alterations vs purchase of a new AC bracket).

One question, though...Looks like I am going to need to cut the existing exhaust as where the OEM headers end is much further down / back than where the OEM headers end. Will I need to be able to weld the new headers or do the headers come with necessary components to bracket the new header to the old exhaust pipe?

Thanks
Shane

Generally you have to but a set of header reducers (comes with the 3 bolt flange) that make it easier to attach headers to the pipe. You can weld the reducers onto the exhaust pipe, or you can clamp them, depending on preference.

Most kits I see on Summit, etc come with the reducers so that is what I was thinking. I will probably just look to clamp since I am without / never used a welder.

Thanks

Usually people buy or make a section of pipe to replace the stock front pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the crossmember. Even with cutting, I don't think the stock front piece will match up to where your header + reducer ends. With my bigblock header install this was actually the hardest part for me. I had 2 different sets of bends (I will find a pic) that I could not make fit. I ended up using flex pipe for a few months until I bit the bullet and went to an exhaust shop.

I even tried these (Hedman) but I couldn't get them to fit either:

What I ended up doing is cutting off the old exhaust, installing new headers, then driving to a muffler shop to have them fix it all.

I installed new 2.5 pipe all the way back.

What did that end up costing you?
I am considering all new stainless steel all the way back as well.

Not bad. It was a while ago, but around $200, I think.
I had him reuse the existing mufflers, and I gave him the flange that came with the header kit.

Not bad at all. I would prob go with new mufflers as well...Something with a little more aggressive sound than I have now.

Summit has header flanges that are both slip fit and actual sizes....for example the 2.5" slip fit has a 2.5 internal diameter and will slip over the 2.5 pipe where the 2.5 Outside diameter will not slip over a 2.5 pipe ...pay attention when yu order and it will work out ok
