I just bought one but have not received it yet. There are several on here that have done the conversion.

Did you try the search function? It may or may not be working.

I have looking into rack and pinion also and decided to go this route instead. Besides being 1/2 the price a few knowledgable people on the forum felt it is a better design

does this still rely on the existing idler arm set up? i think half of our problems come from the too many componets involved inthe steering mechanism

You keep the idler arm and the center drag link. The control valve and the slave cylinder go along with the orignial steering box. I feel the problem is the control valve. It is a catch up game. The steering wheel is moved, the control valve gets pushed to one side and suddenly the control valve has to send oil to the slave cylinder to comprensate for the control valve movement to recenter the control valve. The slave cylinder is always trying to catch the control valve and recenter it.
This Jeep box is a new 90's design, no slave cylinder trying to keep up to an offcenter control valve.
Rack and pinion I believe is $1249 or around that and this is $675. Look under a car with rack and pinion and it is still hanging down under the oil pan. To me the Jeep box is neater and cleans up under the oil pan. The older 80's and 90's jeep box is not the same. It must be 99 and newer if you are using one from a wrecker but again a wrecker box is 4 bolts and our frames are 3 bolts. This kit comes with an adapter so it is a bolt in deal.

Do you suggest replacing any parts like the idler arm or the center drag link?

The idler arm is just a suport for the center drag link. It is either good and or it is bad. If bad it should always be replaced regardless of what you run. What can go wrong with the center drag link?? It is just a steel bar with holes in it, nothing to wear out, nothing moves in it. NO the drag link stays, the slave cylinder goes and the control valve is either replaced with a solid link or a special plug is made and supplied with the kit to bypass the control valve.

i like the idea of losing all those extra steering mechanisms and the weight of them with the steeroids setup.

yes the steeroids is expensive....its like the divorce joke...know why divorces are so expensive?....cause there worth it....

my steeroids is "above the bottom of the oil pan line" and not below it... the oil pan will bottom out first...but the steeroids rack unit does hang down and replaces all that other steering mechanism.

So norvalwilhelm, did the steering box change you did make a big change in the way the car handled? Was it worth the time and money?

I don't think Norval finished the install yet as he's not just bolting it it but actually modifying the frame to make it a nicer, cleaner and better install.

I have my appleton rack and most likely this weekend will have some shots of a mockup of a front steering ETO rack.

I'm starting to warm to this option. 12.7:1 sounds great. One of my problems is that the steering on my Vette just can't be turned quickly enough to suit me - especially in track/autocross situations. Does anyone know the ratio for rack & pinion setups?

The steering rate for the rack is identical to that of the stock system.

The total travel is less however make for fewer turns lock to lock...

yep...I've been looking at this upgrade for a long while...
I e-mailed corvettesteering about 8 mo. ago about this.
tom returned my mail and said kit does come with a part to install in the control valve to make a solid link.
