Motor Mounts - Why So Hard to Find?
Any help is appreciated. I want a pair of the safety/interlock motor mounts. My Corvette is a 75 and I am putting in a 540 ci. I went to Autozone and O'Reilly's and they have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention safety / interlock motor mounts. Recommendations?

Sounds like a good question. I'm operating on a recommendation from a pretty knowledgeable corvette enthusiast. What are the advantages / disadvantages of each (besides cost and availability since the solid mounts are common and cheap).

i just changed mine with the engine in...... i know there had to be a trick to it cause it took me like 4 hours.... but that's also with repainting a few things since the engine was jacked up a bit....

The motor mounts I use are still available from Chevy. After-market one's fit like crap. With that motor, I recommend a rubber mount on the passenger side and a solid mount on the drivers side. Even though the Chevy mounts are "saftey" type, the torque fron that engine will kill the mount in record time!

I've ditched the various questions on motor mounts and went with solid ones from day 1. Never had a problem. I use the Moroso 1/4" BB ones and don't notice excess noise. Those are my vote.

Oh, do NOT get chromed ones from a catalog! I was lucky when putting in this albatross engine and noticed THOSE solid SB ones (slightly thinner, but exact same pattern, except I found it easier to enlarge one bolt hole) - which were also Moroso, but some nay-bob had chromed - were BOTH cracked thorugh and through from all bolt holes. Regular ones are gold iridited or painted. The chroming tends to weaken the metal.

Solid ones work fine, I never noticed much vibration with them.
That said, my '67 800+ HP 540 uses stock interlocking rubber type, mainly just because they were there when I go the car. They have held up perfectly even with mega hard wheelie launches on slicks with a 5 speed! I just haven't seen a reason to change them yet.

Oh sure NOW!!! Where were you when "they" were
killing me man!?!?!?
You should have SEEN the necktie party I got taken to for even DARING to suggest steel mounts were even an OPTION!!!
I can't remember if it was here or on CAC (I'm on both evenly) but man they left me with THREADS!
I've taken to wrapping my mounts in rags just in CASE one of those purists ever should find OUT I have steel!
Yeah, if you don't need them, there's nothing wrong with rubber or poly. As I recall saying in that thread, I'm just used to 15-30 year old cars with original parts and ruined rotted oil degraded rubber and just stopped using them years ago on anything I was keeping. I even went so far on an old caddy as to take a new rubber mount (the old one had broken up), and weld it up to make it a flakey solid!

I've got solid mounts on the engine AND transmission of my '73 454/TH400. I bought a set of poly mounts, but have yet to put them on, as whatever vibration is coming through is so minimal that I don't even notice it.

I found one at a local Corvette shop. Everything at the parts stores were not interlocking. By the way you only need on on the drivers side. Unless you plan to do burn outs in reverse

Or you could play it "Old School"!! and put a torque "bar" in there to stop the engine from twisting out of the mounts...
(As pictured, this engine made over 900hp and drove the car ('66 Vette) into the high 9's.) (I know the owner, driver, chassis-guy, and engine builder)

Been using ES poly's for the past 2 years no problems. They are internal locking BTW.
