the word "heavy" was used in the 70s as a fairly generic adjective to mean, "good"..... "cool" .... "neat".... really having nothing to do with weight. The tag, "heavy chevy" simply meant, "cool car" and was used because it rhymed. You can research it all you want, but I don't think it ever had anything to do with the actual size of the car or its engine.
Like in the Beatles song, I want you .... "She's so......... HEAVY!!!!!! "
note: The word Chevy also rhymes with Levy. (or is it levie)
...the "Heavy Chevy" was actually a model(option?)on '71/'72 Chevelles. Kinda like the Rally Nova or Laguna S3 were just another model with different trim/striping/paint scheme.
boy i dont believe no body got this one right!! the 1958 chevy was the heavy chevy---come on paul!!! and where you at bloomington???? next year i got a room for 3 days on site so you better go on the road tour with me to tear up the streets ,,,i love doing hole shots in frt of the police!!!
maby, maby we got another 4 page post starting again like ''is my car a sting ray''-really thou there were models of cars but the heavy chevy is the 1958 , heaviest chevy built
Paul is right, some Chevelles had a paint scheme w/ Heavy Chevy on it.
(The mid size Chevelles could weigh about 4000 lbs. w/ BB fully loaded.)
Heavy can mean serious in a conversation as opposed to light conversation. Ex. the conservation turns serious & someone might say:
Man, that's heavy.
PS Carl A may also be right about the 58. (it could have been the original heavy Chevy)
That was before my time. I had several 57s in the beginning, but they were old at the time, including a 10 sec. street legal BB.

I remember a kid having one on high school, back in the day. Kind of like a sportier Chevelle with a 350.
In highschool my neighbors boyfriend had a 72 Heavy Chevy. I owned a 76 Laguna S3. Sb 400, black with the white stripes It had the swivel bucket seats!
