I don't think I used any cement on the actual weatherstrip for the top. The header piece uses Push-in fasteners, the rear bow is secured with a rip-cord, and all the others are secured with screws and nuts... The top fabric is secured to vertical side rails with cement and then the weatherstrip goes on top of the fabric.
If the weatherstrip requires cement (like on the hood), use 3M weatherstrip adhesive (try to find the black as the yellow looks like crap if you slop...which you will.).
To make sure you get a tight seal adhesive should DEFINITELY be used. 3M weatherstrip adhesive is the gold standard for this stuff. I agree with using the black, the stuff is thick, nasty and a pain, but it works.

I just replaced my top and all the weather stripping. I didn't use any adhesive for the vert top portions. Heck, if they leak, I can remove and re-seal if required.
