The bottom of the fiberglass portion of #4 body mount is broken out of my car. It was smashed out when the car was driven with a very weak rusty frame. Does anyone know of an insert that can be installed from inside the car and glassed in place? I am prepared to make a mold and make my own if I need to but thought I'd see if one was commercially available.
Why not just get a good metal outer mount support and after cleaning up the remaining fiberglass, secure it to its location against the body. Keep a sheet of plastic between the metal outer mount and fiberglass body; it will peel off the resin. You will now be able to lay up new fiberglass from the inside and maintain the general shape. Once that is accomplished, remove the outer cap and plastic and add a couple layers over the outside. Doing it this way, you can eliminate the gap between the outer support and fiberglass that collected road debris and promoted rust in the area. You can shape it as needed to refit the outer support after everything sets up. Be sure you take some measurment from the good side so it isn't too low. That would make mounting the body more difficult later. These cars were not made perfect from the factory, so close is good enough.
Maybe you might be interested in calling Volunteer Vette (sponsor) and ordering part BM98E, Rear Body Mount #4 Reinforcement (LH), or BM98F, Rear Body Mount #4 Reinforcement (RH). Each metal piece is listed at $40.00. Telephone No. 865-521-9100. A picture is on page 23 in my catalog.
These pieces are of an approximate cup like appearance an are riveted to the body at the #4 mounting location. They have a hole in their bottom portion for the #4 bolt to pass through.
look on the photos on my restoration web site(cheezy free site)it shows the same thing on #4----my reinforcement plates were rusted away,,,and then the body mount goes thru the fiberglass,,,,you'll have to get the #4 reinforcement plates or whatever there called and re-glass the blown glass,, the repair is no big deal,,,just getting to it is! i had mine both reglassed when we lifted the body,,------------------------------------------------------http://www.geocities.com/carlclub2/
