So my vette finally arrived from the states the other week...been lkeeping me busy I tell ya! (a few problems - but learning alot about these cool cars)....forum has been great.
Anyway, I was wondering if my t top straps are correct and if the mounting brackets are in the right place??
(see pics below)
Ive seen alot of cars with the single Y-strap..which mounts to three brackets (2 in rear compartment and 1 on verticle part near e-brake/elbow rest (sorry for the terrible explanation - Im pooped)...however I haven't seen any like mine....but it seems to match the drawing in the assembly manual I have.
I have a early 1970 coupe.
(don't take notice of the ugly carpeting that has fallen off the back ledge....its on my list of things that need attention! )
So as you can see...I have 2 seperate straps..and therfore 4 mounting places in total.
From: No matter where you go, there you are. No VA
Congrats on the car! My straps were removed because they were ugly, I jut put the tops in their bags and have had no problems with them sliding around in the back.
I wonder if someone was using them as a hold down for some rear speakers.
...they look original and look like they are meant to be there.
I looked at the assembly manual and it looks the same....(unless Im looking at it incorrectly! )
My 70 has the two individual straps, when I tried to put my tops in with covers; I could not. I would also like to see one with the straps and tops in installed.

cool...at least I know there is another 70 with the same straps as me! Are my mounting clip things in the same place as yours?
Yeah, I would also like to see a pic on how we put t tops under these 2 seperate straps...so these 2 seperate straps must be original for 70??
Abolutely, the 1970 Coupes have two straps for the
T-Tops, one strap per T-Top. My 69 had two straps also. I assume the 68's did also. Don't know when the Y-strap first appeared in production.
Do your T-Top straps match the interior? My understanding is that GM intended the T-Top straps to have the same color as the interior, however if they ran out of the correct color, they just put in black. I understand that the black straps would most likely be used at the end of a model year. (Of course all black interior cars got black straps all year around!!!)

my 73 has the ''y'' strap so i guess it changed over from the 2 straps in 71 or 72

Thanks for confirming my setup is correct...boy do I feel relieved...and I can concentrate on the things that actually do need fixing!
I have a black interior and my two straps are black (well a very worn down black!). I think they must have changed to the single Y-strap in 71...as I have seen a 71 owners manual that shows this was the case.
Mine is an EARLY 70 vette...so I have the 68/69/early70 rear window tray...whereas later in 70 they changed the tray to the second style.
The reason why I brought this up, is I was wondering if this was a similar case with the two- t-top strap thing...just curious as to whether the later 70 vettes has this or went to the single Y-strap.
Cool. Im really enjoying learning all these different things....learning is fun when your learning things about things you love!!!!
I have a late 70 and I have the 2 straps like yours. They are the same light saddle as the interior color. One thing I do notice in your pic is that those seat belts are not in the original location as mine.
yes mine are black on my 70... same as interior, still would like to see how the tops are supposed to be placed in rear with bags on the tops. Anyone with pics?
rihwoods pic is what your top straps are origianally supposed to look like. Yours have been modified for some purpose other than t-top hold down.
Eddie
Yup - early C3 had two separate straps.
I have the mounts, but I cannot find the straps anywhere.
Oh well - since I tie them down to the luggage rack anyway.
