when I bought my 70 a year ago, it already had the holes drilled for the rack and the car came with a new stainless rack, I just repainted the car and left the holes and left the rack off, I dont really care for the look, In order to fill the hole correctly you need to remove the gas tank and fiberglass the from bottom then fill it in on the top, alot of times when the light hits it right you will still see wher the holes were filled in, I left mine and bought some plastic plugs from the hardware section at lowes ( in the little drawers I believe I used 1/2" ) and painted them body color and they dont look to bad and if I ever want tihe rack on or if I sell it I can pop out the plugs and bolt it on, I wish it was never drilled so I didnt have to use the plugs but the plugs look better than the hole or patched up hole on some cars, and I think the rack hurts the looks of the car more than the plugs.
If I was going to to go back in time and order a 68-73...I would probably opt for no rack. However, IMHO they both look damn good. The 72 LT-1 has a rack and the 70LT-1 does not. If it was me, I would leave it in it's original configuration....specially if its in pretty much original condition now.
Just my 2 cents

If you can document it as dealer installed, then I would re-install a nice repo. However if you cant document it, do what you like best.
NO RACK, especially if you plan to sell. MANY will not even look at a Corvette with a rack and if a guy wants it later it is MUCH easier to add it than remove it!! Removing it involves mechanical (bolting it off), body (filling the mounting holes), and paint; adding a rack takes drilling and mechanical work ONLY.
If it has a rack, keep it on. If it doesn't, don't add it. They look great on most C3's by adding a splash of chrome (or, in some cases, stainless). My $02.
my bf and I were thinking yesterday (cause he hates the rack too - and if I had a choice I wouldn't have the rack on mine!) and anyway....we were thinking how the hell did dealers cope with getting these brand spanking new off the factory floor awesome looking cars and put a drill to them and drill all these holes in the rear deck!!!!!!!!
I would have probably had a heart attack before the drill piece touched the body!
I just bought a 71 after a long search. Any car with a rack was disqualified for me. I'm not going to do the Grapes of Wrath schtick with the folidng chairs, cooler, etc. back there, and don't want to wax around it.
I don't mind seeing them on others, I just don't want it on mine.
My '71 came with a rack and I've been talking about how I am going to lose it for nine years. I have a shop that will fill and paint the holes for next to nothing (about $900), so cost isn't an issue. My problem is that I've kind of become attached to it. It makes the car look more like the sports car that it is, and it is functional for those week long trips (the better half and I don't pack light very well). For selling the car, though, I would agree that you are better off without it.

My 71 vert now has a luggage rack. It is rusted. I will be getting it painted Brands Hatch Green and it has saddle interior. Original rally's and new chrome will be ging back on it. Will end up selling the car soon so the rack decision is tough since it will need to be replaced.
