I found my orignal one had a broken mount bracket and someone genius back pre 1978 used a wire tie to hold it together and then place a piece of electrical tape on the vaccum can to insulate it! Does anyone know if the mount is separate or part of aa new relay? Is this still available from GM?
Thank you,
Gary
Hi Gary
I bought a 72 GM horn relay off Ebay and yes...the mounting bracket & relay is a one piece unit. You mentioned a vacuum unit on the relay. There is no vacuum unit. If we're taliking about the horn relay under the left fender next to the vac tank...that's an electrical relay & power supply block. Check Paragon & Doc Rebuild for a GM relay...

P.S. See ya at Carlisle
Thanks Eddie,
I was referring to the vaccum tank,it's right next to the relay where there are several red 12v wires. Bubba put tape there after he wire tied the relay to the bracket. I'll look around Carlisle for one, I'm sure one will show up!

Still confused...
Vac resevoir tank has it's own mount brackets welded to it.
Horn relay has it's own mount bracket, one piece unit.
Wire Harness clips above & below vac tank. (Doc has em)
Windshield Washer bag mounting bracket (A/C cars)
That's all the brackets that should be under there...

Ok Eddie let try and clear it up. The relay is indeed mounted to the inner fender with soem well nuts. The Vaccum tank for the headlights is mounted next to it. What I found was the plastic bracket the relay is made of was broken in half many many years ago. Bubba used a wire tie to go around the "ice cube" portion of the relay and the broken bracket, then used 1 well nut to hold it to the inner fender. Now Bubba realized that it was still flopping around and the 12v wire terminal is exposed and could have hit the tank. I don't think the tank is grounded but Bubba put some electrical tape there to insulate the hot terminal when it bounced into the tank. How's that sound- any better?
