Default Alternator Plating

www.vettepics.com/images/70/1970_silver_062805_thumb.jpg Hi, I have an alternator that will be rebuilt (1100884, 61 amp) in a 1970 350/300hp air conditioning car and would like to know if the fan is cad or zinc plated, I think the big block was silver cad plated. Thanks

will this be retored correctly? can't say off top of head. you might want to consult the NCRS tech message boards, and or get a judging manual.

The fan is still available from GM as a service part at a very reasonable price. It differs slightly from the production line piece but only a true NCRS guy would spot it. The original finish was silver cadmium plated if I remember right. Just another way to get the job done for a low price.

Jim,

As it was explained to me, the finish for the fan on 1968-1972 Corvette alternators is dependent on the build date of the alternator (not the car).

Alternators built prior to the 1970 calendar (not model) year typically have a fan that is painted a semi-gloss black... Those alternators built after the 1970 calendar year have a fan that is plated bright zinc. Therefore, you would expect to find black fans on early build 1970 Corvettes until they were depleted from inventory and zinc plated fans were used exclusively.

The application had nothing to do with the finish on the fan... The people assembling these alternators had no idea what engine/option car these would end up on.

Regards,

Thank you for the info on the fan, as I am trying to restore the car and my local plating shop wants about $100 to do the fan, half to clean and half to plate in zinc, I am sure there are other options. Thanks again.
