OMFG! Whomever designed the heater core system and or the thought process to build a car around a heater core must have been out of their mind. This is the second Vette I have replaced a heater core in. The 77 was much worse but this still sucks. It took 2 hours just to get this far. I have a new core/ gaskets/ doors/ expansion tank ready to go in.

The 77 was an A/C car. If the 68 was i'd keep the heater core permanently bypassed and just wear a coat if it ever got cold (cold in San Diego is < 70 degrees).
Not sure if you noticed, or not (apparently no one else did)...there seems to be a small dog stuck in your vent system. Try removing the dog first before attempting further repairs...
I agree it is a PITA but I have had to replace heater cores in various other vehicles. and they were all different however all still a PITA.
It will be nice when you are done.

Actually, I was thinking that the dog has the same expresion on its face that my wife gets when I talk about repairs.
On f#$% day two and the boxes are all sanded down and ready for paint, all I have to do is clean-up the engine bay and interior and throw it together by friday and off I go.
I'm not sure how the dog got in the car but I was shooting the engine bay and saw Chief's face and thought it was cute.....

After replacing all the heater box seals, you should notice a cooler interior. While you are down there, take a look at the astro vent doors behind the kick panels, those seals are a major source of interior heat. Just make sure the dog is out before sealing it up.
BTW, nice car!

Yeah, if the dog 'vents' it's definitely not fresh air!
Having fun huh! LOL... Doing the same thing here but with (Air). Needless to say, the engine is out... I did replace the actuator on the Heater box aswell!!!! Well, tried to, the new one would not hold pressure on one side, and had to send it back!!!! Can u believe that!!!! ummm, Now I'm waiting on another one.... Don <~~~ tapping foot...
I just got about 10 feet of buytl tape and\before I install everything I'm going to seal all the surfaces that GM didn't and hopefully get a really sealed system.
Just got done. Five days later.
All new butyl seals plus I doubled up the butyl tape on all connections to the inner heater box.
New expansion tank
It took 4 hours to get the guages and sterio in. Whomever designed the 2 bolts that come off the bottom of the guage clutster and bolt down to the center shifter console should also be shot, there is absolutely no way to get access to them unless you have a lillipution living with you.
