Default headlight doors

howdy boys (and girls),

i'm fixing to dive into my 76 headlong.....the previous owner must have thought he was a wiz with new glass and bondo or something....all the seems on the car are filled and he also (tried to) "smoothed" the headlight doors.

one of the projects on my to do list is to try and restore the lights ability to pop up (i'm going with the electric motor route).....as i'm shopping for parts it almost looks to me like the doors themselves are made of metal??? is this correct??(feeling guilty for not knowing the answer to this question on my own) it'd be awesome if i could get all the built-up crap off the doors without having to worry about harming the fiberglass underneath.

thanks

This might help you, if you do not already know, but sounds like you do.

I have purchased everything but the 2 accuators (2 most expensive parts) from GM. I have a friend that owns an automotive business and he let me order the parts through his company and saved a few $$$. I am not going to the junk yard to try and find this stuff only for it to fail (if it works at all) shortly after the installation is done.
