Default Rust, Rust, Rust!!

Besides sandblasting, which I dont have a sandblaster, what do you guys (gal's) use to remove rust off of parts. For instance I just removed the spare tire carrier and the main metal bracket and the 3 long bolts are pretty rusted. I have heard of soaking bolts in coke or something like that, anyone have suggestions?

You can soak small parts in vinegar to remove rust. I usually leave things in for 2 days. You will be suprised at how good the parts look after soaking. The parts will get a fine coating of rust within a day or so after rinsing, but if you coat them with something like Rust Bullet or POR-15 the paint will actually stick better to the rusted surface.

metal ready from www.por-15.com and then paint with por15 if aplicable. the metal ready nutralizes and stops the rust. i have some pics of por15 painted stuff in my pictures.

Default Rusted!

I use a wire cup brush attachment on my heavy duty drill (don't use a portable) and a small wire wheel brush attachment for those hard to reach bits. For bolts/nuts I use my bench grinder with wire wheel.

Make sure you paint, grease or otherwise protect bare metal asap.

GM spec Parts Cleaner does an amazing job btw.

We have a bead blaster at work that I use on anything I can get into the cabinet. I do all fasteners that come off the car before they go back on. I think the shop supervisor now regrets the day he showed me how to use that tool!

You can purchase a cheap sand blaster for under/at $100 and if you are doing a lot of resto work, it will be worth the investment. In lew of that buy the wire wheel like suggested above and put it on your bench grinder...you DO have one of those, don't you?

A knotted wire wheel on a 4.5" grinder - fast removal of surface rust.
Vinegar is cheap - if the parts are small enough to submerge.
Phosphoric acid solutions (like Metal Ready) act quickly to
dissolve rust. Wire brushing - then treating again can remove
all rust and leave an Iron-Phosphate finish (very good for painting over).
For parts that cannot be submerged ... I like Naval Jelly for dissolving rust - sticks well.

I always coat with POR15 after prepping. It's a pain, but I
will not ever be brushing rust off these parts again.
