Default Door Panels

Does anyone have any experience with door panel skins? These are the skins that fit over your existing door panels.

I have one that came with the car when I bought it. I haven't had a chance to install it yet. Based on responses to my previous query here on the topic, it seems like no one has tried this. I haven't been able to find any installation instructions.

Please share if you find any info.

If you do install it please let us know how it goes. If possible post pictures as well. I am considering skins as my door panels are good except some of the material at the corners is damaged. A professional shop I asked said don't bother and go with complete new door panels but, I am interested in seeing an alternative.

I don't think you'll be happy with the way skins fit over your existing skin. If you decide to remove the old skin from the core it is a lot of time and effort, not to mention getting the skin to lay out on the old core. IMHO I would go with a bare door panel and install the trim & hardware from your existing panels. Less work and it will look better.

I did skins on my 68 door panels. I had installation instructions, but it is very very difficult to get a truly smooth install. It's a lot of work, and I think that it is only a short term solution. If you really want them to look right, get replacements. My .02

Eckler's carried door skins some years back. They had so many returned for poor fit and difficulty in installation that they discontinued them. I've still got old Eckler's catalogues with disclaimers about discontinuing the door skins.

I appreciate the info. I will be going to the door panel replacement route. Thanks for the input, just thought I'd ask.

A couple of years ago when I was in midst of restoring my 68 I looked into skins and heard so many negative comments about them from various sources that I decided on replacement panels instead and just transferred all my hardware from the old panels to the new. Then sold the old panels to someone who just wanted them for a daily driver. I am happy that I went the replacement route since if the skins didn't come out right, I would have the added cost of then buying the replacement panels anyway. The replacements look factory perfect.
Just my 2 cents

those would have been cool had they not made it soo bright.....if they would have just kept it black and had the flame design, it would have been more subtle and a lot better looking
