Default C3/ hood clearance
How much additional clearance should I expect if I replace the base 1968 hood with an L-88 hood?

Looking at mine, I'd say approximately 3"...(don't have the old stock small block hood anymore for reference, but the bottom of my 3" air cleaner is at stock hood level and the wing nut is 1/4" below the L-88 hood top).

L-88 hood rises about 2 inches above my stock hood, I think.
