My wife is a big music fan, and so I want to put a cd stereo in her 74. Are there mounting kits for old vettes? Is there enough support to attach a cd player in the dash? Along time ago, before the anti skip tech got better, I heard that dash cd players in old cars couldn't work.
Absolutely you can. It's been so long since cd's skipped in cd players I almost forgot about that.
I forget if your 74 dash is basically the same as the 69 but if so (someone will chime in) you have to cut out the rectangle with a dremel or cutoff and then make or buy the small bezel cover you see in the picture of mine below. I made mine but they also sell them at the various vette vendor catalogues.
I highly recommend the unit I bought, Clarion Music Catcher, because you record songs from your cd's onto the actual unit and they are stored in a small hardrive or memory area on the head unit. That way I don't have to carry cd's along with me when I cruise. Especially cool since I rarely ever have the t-tops or back glass in.
Thanks for the photos guys. Those both look great. My wife is getting an ipod for her birthday, so she will be using that for her tunes and i'll rig it to connect to the aux in on the back of the stereo.
If you are going to use an Ipod or any other 'player' look for a stereo that has a front Aux In....I have one, it's an Aiwa and I can play anything (CD, Cassette, 'MP3, WMA etc. player') with out having to make a rear connection...the only thing I have coming out of the rear is a headphone connection for those evenings on the highway with the top down...it has a splitter for two headphones...put Pink Floyd on...say..the song "Comfortably Numb"...top down...say...70mph...and you got heaven on Earth...

I just cut my dash and installed an indash CD unit. Got the bezel (cover) from millionbuy.com. Made by American International part number FP-306. It covers the cuts etc. MUCH better with a good CD player than the crappy tape deck mine came with (the tape deck was installed incorrectly, and looks like it was purposely shorted out!!)
I just put in a Sony xplod in, it mounts in a retangular hole which is easy to cut out. It is a MP3 player also, the CD good for 6 hours of music on 1 disc.
Very easy install with everything included in the box.
Hey Rich, I have something similar it looks like we put the remote in the same place.
First time I used it,I dropped it next to tunnel/pass side..had to stop and fish it out..it is a thin little dude, but handy....better than reaching for the radio controls..
I have never hooked up a radio in a car: do the standard corvette plugs fit modern radio's? Did anyone have any trouble hooking up the antenna? Or is it all just the same?
Maybe if someone could post a picture of their radio connected...?

The plug does not fit any of the new radios. I just used spade connectors to hook the radio to the plug so I didn't have to cut anything. You will need to add a power source to the new radio to keep the memory/time. I pulled it off the cig lighter. The radios come with the speaker wires without any plug so I ran new wires to the new speakers I put in. Everything is pretty straight forward.
