Default 68 Corvette Restoration

I need a kick in the butt on a frame off restoration. I've owned this #s mataching 68 Corvette over 20 years. Unlike the bad press on the 68s I've had excellent luck with mine, I just need to get with! I'm new to this board but not Corvettes. I'll post pixs after I figure how, AL.

Well get your butt in gear and get to it!!
Just kidding.
I am just finishing up my 68 coupe restoration. This week I am installing the radio and speakers so I can button up the interior.
I started in August of 1995, 10 long years ago, so don't feel bad.
Everybody kept telling me to just get with it and the project took much longer than I ever expected but daily life sometimes gets in the way of the hobby.
What color are you painting it? What engine option?
Like you, I have owned mine since 1972 (45,000 miles on the odometer) and NEVER had any of the 68 related problems I have heard so many speak about. Maybe I am lucky. My lights and wiper panel always worked perfect and still do and my clock has never given me problems. Mine was built May 10, 1968 so maybe that accounts for why I got lucky; maybe most of the problems were with the earlier build dates.
Anyway, best of luck with your restoration.
Show us some pictures when you get a chance and holler if I can help in any way. I have lots of books but you probably do as well if you are going down the restoration path.

I'm just starting a frame-off on my '69 coupe so we can sweat through it together! I am new to Corvettes, but hope my experience with street rods and muscle cars will help me through. I've already got a lot of great advice from forum members.

Kurk, I started the restoration in 93 and have just about every thing but the rear window defogger vent (point broken off at screw hole). Mine is a British Green coupe built 4/29/68. 327 4 speed, 3:55 posi, AM/FM radio (correct one), tinted glass, rear defogger, shoulder seat belts, red line tires (tank sticker verified). She been a great car and a keeper. I still have not fogure how to post pixs on this board, its different then I'm use to, AL.

Al,
Here are the directions I copied from another forum member. Haven't tried it yet so hope they work for you.
"It's free to set up a PHOTOBUCKET account and post all your pictures there. http://photobucket.com
When you want to post on forum, open a post, then go to photobucket, right click on the third box IMAGE, of the photo you want to use, then click copy.
Move back to your forum post, right click PASTE and it will show you text numbers like: http://img.photobucket.com?albums/v323 Blue 66/etc.jpg for that photo you selected. Once you post it, the photo should come up like magic on the site. You can preview what it will look like by hitting preview before you hit submit. "

My 68 has the L79 motor, A/C, power windows, steering, & brakes, telescope wheel, rear defogger, tinted windows, I have the original stereo and underdash mounted amp, but I do not have the original tires as you do. Mine is a 4 speed.
Kurt

Wow Kurk!!! Cool ride!!!! My wife tried to talk me into painting mine the same color as yours but the the tank sticker said British Green. A/C is a nice touch in that car as you know they get real hot inside. I installed all the body insulation panels, even a interior set. AL.

Al,
That's funny. When I bought my car from a friend of mine who was the original owner, he had painted it a dark green, Cadillac Firemist Green, as I recall. The car left the factory code 976 LeMans Blue that is why I painted it LeMans Blue when I restored it. It looks lighter in the daylight than it does in my garage.
I tired to go to the link you had but it said I have to be a member of that site and now the site is down.
Try the photobucket link and see if that works for you. I just tried it first time today and I am old and computer challenged (my son tells me) so if I can do it anybody can.

Tonyd,
I took stuff off and threw it away because I didn't know any better. Then I started reading about matching numbers and realized I threw out many original parts. Over the least 10 years I have spent outrageous sums to get back what I once had.
How about $1,000 for a used correct carburetor and then $350.00 to have it rebuilt and set up to run perfect. Boy did I learn some lessons the hard way. I will never throw anything away again.

I am in the middle of mine.
I'm just waiting on parts right now before I can get started again.
I'm hoping that brown brings the last ones today.

Check it out here.

Thanks!! Yes doing a 68 is not easy! It's been a challage and I'm winning the battle. The last problem was a set of pillar post covers that didn't fit, didn't even have the correct plactic fasteners to hold them on. So I had the origninal one recovered and they fit! So far I have done all but the paint work on this frame off restoration. Good luck on yours it's looks like a well restored 68 is comming up in value, AL.

Kurk, I guess I'm luck on mine. It was all there and complete. It didn't start out as a frame off restoration. I found a the dog leg part of the frame rotted out. The strange part was the rest of the frame was rock solid! I replaced the two rear sections with reproduction pieces and they look great and much stronger then it was new. The other problem was inside the the body in the same area and was able to make a inside body support working threw the body mount access hole without cutting the car up. AL.

Welcome to the Forum!! I am just finishing up the work on my '68 convertible as well. I hope to have the last touches to the interior done this weekend. I may even get to drive it before the leaves start changing color! My frame off took 5 years to complete. As Kurt said, family items have priority over the car. The kids are only young once.

You'll find lots of help here on the Forum and many '68 owners who have been there and done that, so ask.

I hope to have new pictures soon. For now, check out my website to see a little of what you are getting in to. The site hasn't been updated for a couple of years. I've made mucho progress since.
