Default clearance checker.

I thought of a way to check under hood clearances. Dirt simple and most already have the tool.
Mount a digital camera. Push the timer on the thing and close the hood. You can stick a ruler for measurement in the picture.

To mount make a fixture, tape it in place or put a blob of playdoh on a flattish spot and put the camera on that. Should I mention to do this with the engine cold?
Want to check clearance on your air filter take a picture with a ruler and then you have the distance. The ruler don't have to be touching the hood. You can extrapulate (guess) from the pictures idea of an inch.

Another use is if you have a cad program and need to draw a part or something to an exact shape and scale. Take a picture of this spot or thing. Load the picture into cad and set the units to something on the picture to size it exactly.
Now you can trace the important thing and don't have to take a plethora of measurements.

How about taking some soft clay and putting on top of the air cleaner, close the hood and measure the amount of squish.

You can also remove one front wheel/tire, stick your hand/camera thru the splash shields and take as many pics as you want. You'll have to guess at the position but make sure the flash is "on."

You can also raise the front end on ramps and put your hand up into the engine compartment right behind the radiator. Might depend on how long of arms you have.

Looks like you had a backfire through your carb too. Better set your timing.

That method requires no technology and doesn't take nearly enough time...It'll never work....

This wasn't the long way around to a simple solution but when the simple solution won't work. The next method.
The problem with it is what if you don't have any squish to measure? No clearance? You know it interferes but not by how much. Your right back where you started. Now you take a picture.
Or as in my case there isn't an air cleaner or a carb there. Well it is but I'm not interested in if the carb clears just what kind of room for an EFI I don't have yet. What room do I have to play with. I want to use the hoods cold air induction at the windshield. Where clay shows clearance on the air filter means a whole lot of measuring and drawing out to do what a few pictures will.

And does not cost enough either.
