Default Door panel trim problem

So I get a new pair of door panels for my '71, and I'm stripping the deluxe trim off the old ones to swap over when I notice that the lock **** backplates aren't screwed on - they are tacked with a little washer welded onto the post. I thought they would be screwed on like the repros I've seen. Without spending $63 for a new pair of these plates from Zip, is there a way to reattach the old ones to my new panel successfully? Or am I screwed? () Everything else was going so well...

I carefully removed the originals from the old panels, drilled new holes for them in the new panels and used some split rings and jb weld to attach them to the panels....worked great.

Excellent idea. Good to know that JB will stick to the posts. Thanks!

I did the same on my 70. Thank God for JB Weld. This was done 3 years ago and I recently found one of the washers with JB Weld attached on the floor. Looks like time to redo some of those welds.

Just did my door panels on my 74, I drilled the center post and used self taping screws.

Worked great - thanks. JB and the washers seem to be holding really well. All I have to do now is set the panel and pop the holes for the top screws. I found that my attaching clips were both broken, so those had to be ordered new Anyway, looks like the panels will be installed by next weekend.

I drill and tap them for 4-40 screws. Got all I needed at the local hardware. Tap,drill, and different length screws.
