Default Brake rotors

Why are the rotors pinned on to the wheel bearing assembly?

They were riveted on at the factory for two reasons. Number one was to keep them in place while the car was being assembled. Number two was to control the rotor runout. The rotors were machined after being riveted onto the hub. You don't need to reinstall them after you drill them out, but you really need to keep the runout to a minimum, less than about .005".

actually steve your #2 reason is the primary reason, the factory machined the rotor on the spindle to guarantee it's abolutely true and the rotor runout would be at a minimum.
