Finally decided to put new brakes, lines and master cylinder on. I have a good start, but I'm now stuck on the rear rotors. They're stuck. I've had them off many years ago and I'm pretty sure its stuck with rust. I've used some PB Blaster, and hit it a few times pretty hard but they don't budge at all. Should I keep pounding?( If so where and how since there is not a lot of room. Is ther a puller that works? What about heat?
Sounds like parking brake pads. Even if you can turn the rotors it may still be the pads - they may have "worn" into the inner diameter of the brake drum/disc.
whats the best way to deal with the pads if they're worn into the drum. Seems like you'd see some movement even if they're stuck on the pads.
Thanks for the advice
Loosen the star adjuster from behind. I don't remember which way to turn it but if the brakes get tight go the other way. Even if the cables are loose the shoes are still extended by that adjusting screw.
After that try a big puller with just a little force on the rotor. Hit the drum with a big soft hammer and it will pop loose.
Feedback on the removal...
I assumed that the rear emergency brakes had been serviced within 120K miles and that the rivets had already been dealt with. Turns out that the brakes had not been serviced and that I had to drill out the rivets. Once they were removed, both sides popped loose fairly easily.
Not sure why it was designed this way unless for manufacturing and assembly.
Emergency Brake shoes are a pain to work on with the flange covering everything up.
I think the original post threw everyone off course, 'I've had them off many years ago'. By now you figured out that you could beat on them all day and they won't move at all if the rivits are still there.
