Default Opinions needed....

Hey guys;

Normally I'm in the c-4 / C-5 sections, but today I went and looked at a 1968 vette. It's for sale and I'm in need of some opinions. First I'll list what I do know about the car:
1968 t-top
82k miles
350 cu.in.
auto trans
red 'repaint' exterior..not well done
black interior, fair condition
exterior trim fair to poor
car last driven 2001 ( woman said it just quit while driving it, she keeps it registered)
frame looks o.k
I checked the dip stick. oil color looked o.k.
Checked the radiator. couldn't see any water in it (might not be a good thing)
overall condition....not below fair...plus I haven't heard it running. It's going to take some work.

What do you think it's worth?? better to part out?

Thanks in advance!

The one year only parts get to be a PITA and expensive.
Unless you're willing to put some extra effort into into that aspect, pass on it. My $0.02.

If its got a solid frame and birdcage, then its prob. worth tackling if you can do some of the work yourself.

What's the asking price?

Offer $7500, see if she takes it.

Agree on $7500 or less....NADA GUIDE has low retail at $7950.00 for one you described....but that is a functioning Vette...

The 68 year is unique in that it has many 68 only parts. Of course this translates into more expensive parts.

I was looking at a running 68 last month for $8500 and passed on it because it needed more work than what it would end up being worth. It did not have the original engine, and that is what I was looking for.

If the car you are looking at has a 350 engine, then it may not be original either. I think the 68 had a 327 engine in it. Of course there are others that dont care about the engine becasue the plan on pulling it and putting in a more agressive set up.

Since the car is not running, and has sat for a number of years, you might be looking at a good price. Somewhere around $7000 due to the condition of the car.

I would think the price is going to vary depending on how much work it really needs and how bad you want to own a 68. Look at the car and write down what needs to be fixed. Make a seperate list of things that should be changed. This should give an indication of what the car will cost to put it on the road and not being embarrased to be seen in it.

Here is a link to a program that gives a rough idea as to the value of the different years. The last update was almost 2 years ago so the pricing is typically on the low side.

based upon your description, my personal opinion is to offer way below the $7000 price range. it is obvious that it will require a lot of work (if you buy it right, i believe it is worth the investment). personally i wouldn't offer more than $4000 (and would probably be much less to start) based on your description and see what happens. without it running, i would certainly have to assume that you're looking at $3k for a dependable engine for starters and that's assuming you don't care about originality. go from there. a good vette paint job assuming no glass work is in the $7000 range if you can't do it yourself. figure about $2500-3000 for a complete interior (including a new dash) if you buy the parts and do it yourself. that should give you some kind of an idea as to what you are looking at if you have to farm out the harder work. BUT IT IS A CHROME BUMPER CAR, LOL!!

Belchertown, I used to service milling machines up there!

Look it over good. In our area(NE) frames are all too commonly rotted or patched. I bought a great 75 up in Ashland but the upper Ws frame is rotted out and I'll have to replace it.

If the car has been sitting for almost 5 years think about brakes and rubber parts needing attention. I have both a 4 spd and TH400 and would buy a 4 spd over the auto anyday of the week and mine is all rebuilt! Your choice.

'68 has some odd parts that will cost a lot if you go to restore the car.

If the frame id good build a nice non NCRS street car and "lite em up!!!"

If you have any questions let me know.
