I was wondering if someone has any idea what could be wrong with my Vette. It is a 78 w/ AT and when I am driving there is a moderate vibration but when you shift the car into neutral while driving the vibration disappears. Also if you reach a certain RPM and there is not much of a load or need for power the vibration disappears.
A friend of mine suggested it might be u-joints. Any thoughts?

this guide can help...very difficult to determine cause in driveline...follow tips...make sure it is not an exhaust resonance..that usually occurs at 1500 RPM-3500 RPM...don't overlook tire balance...keep us posted on your tests...tip..follow "test drive/dianosis section first..."

This sounds exactly like a problem I was having a couple of years ago with a Van I own. Being in the parts business I mentioned this to different mechanics that I sell to. One of the mechanics checked under the vehicle and found the automatic transmission tailhousing bushing to be bad. He was right. Replaced it and haven't had another problem with vibration. This bushing sits inside the tail shaft housing right where the driveshaft goes into the rear of the tranny.

A U-joint is like a CV axle....a bad one WILL ALWAYS cause a vibration under any load. If the drive shaft is damaged or out of balance it will vibrate all the time.....best of luck
