What is the part called that covers the distributor on a 78 anniversary edition corvette? We think originally the cover may have been chrome. We are trying to find parts for rebuilding the engine. Does anyone have one for sale? Please PM me.
... pretty sure 78-82 was foil lined black plastic ... yup, just checked.
Black plastic with grained texture ... aluminum foil lined.
Oh: only on vettes equipped with radio.
Up to 77 were chrome plated steel ... with the right brackets,
a 74-77 should fit.
Not sure what yer lookin for but there is a small chrome cover that fits on top of the dist. cover and it has small cutouts for the plug wire heads. It just snaps on.
78 only had the black cover shield with foil inside...
that is absolutely correct. unlike earlier models, the 78 (and later) have a one piece, black plastic ignition shield that is foil lined. it is strangely shaped with long "legs" on each side of the "box" shaped portion that fits over the distributor. it has a metal backing plate and bolt thread through the upper right (passenger) side which has a wing nut on it. it is for a woven bare ground strap that is attached to the block. i have yet to find anyone who is reproducing this item. they appear regularly on ebay for around $40-50 dollars. i have 3 or 4 of them and have yet to find one in really excellent condition. most of the time, they were removed and discarded because they really weren't that necessary (you could surpress the radio static by other means) and many people thought they were ugly.
A little off the subject but something I have wondered about for some time. Why is it called an ignition shield? What does it shield from, being seen? Not being a smartazz, just curious.

Shields the radio receiver from electro-magnetic interference.
You know ... when the AM radio lets you hear the engine "whine" through the radio.

As stated earlier, the purpose of the shielding was to surpress radio interference caused by the ignition.
Thank you everyone, this is great. I will pass this on to my friend who has yet to become a member of the Forum. He just bought his 78 from another man here at work and is starting the repair work. I mostly live in the c5 section but like to visit here. I love the c3 but could not find one at the time that I could count on as a daily driver. I am hoping to get a c3 in the next couple of years for a weekend driver and car shows. Have a great day.
