road hum normal???

road hum normal???

I have noticed a hum while driving that sounds as if it is coming from the driver side front tire while cruising at highway speeds. I never noticed before but i just recently started cruising with the windows up and tops on. Just wondered if there is anything mechanical i should be looking at or if this is normal in a closed up coupe.

it could be a flat spot on the tire but it could also be the wheel bearing, wheel bearings going bad make a humming sound that changed frequency & pitch w/ speed. Usually it's very noticable at certain speeds (when the wheel bearing rpm is so that the harmonics amplify)

on the way home i was thinking wheel bearing....any sure ways to tell other then take apart and replace?

Jack it up and check for play in bearing at 6 and 9 o'clock by grabbing wheel....check both sides....

I had a bad set of gears in my diff. They only hummed on deceleration or coasting. It was quite load with the top up and windows up. I put in new gears last winter and no problems.
