Default Octane Boosters

I am sure this is a thread thats been beat to death but I have a question regarding Octane Boosters. I have been told to try the Lucas Oil products octane booster I hear it works well. My 68 is a 11-1 427 motor with factory style alum heads. It seams to run fine on 93 but occasionally it will run on after I shut it off. I have weaned it off the Sunoco 100 no-lead since the price has exceeded 6 $ a gallon. What's your thoughts guys ? Any onr using the Lucas ?

Thanks

It may work, but leaves deposits on top of pistons, large deposits, thus increasing compression and compounding the problem...best bet is to use Sunoco 94 and retard the timing a bit

I would prefer to use a clear-type boosters (solvent-looking) as opposed to caramel colored --which I believe (just my opinion) could leave deposits. If you do a little research, you'l find that other hydrocarbons like toluene can boost octane.

Cant say that I have tried it yet.

My guess is that run-on is caused by deposits or other hot spots in the combustion chamber. At idle the compression pressure should be a lot lower than when you are driving. GM makes a top end cleaner that you may want to try. Or, you can pour a small amount of water down the carb with the engine running, and already hot, to try and clean out the combustion chamber.

My 427 has a CR just over 10-1 and iron heads, and it runs fine on 93. With your aluminum heads, you should be fine on 93. I'm not a fan of the octane boosters for fear of what they leave behind.

All, just be careful since lots of supposedly octane boosters are snake oil. To boost the octane of one gallon of gasoline requires the addition of a numerically significant amount of booster having an octane higher than the gasoline. For example, to raise 1 gal of 87 octane up to a 93 octane, you'd need to add 1 pint of 200 octane material. Therefore, even at today's premium gasoline prices, it makes more sense and more economical to just buy premium gasoline to begin with.

I use a product produced by Kemco (Lead Supreme 130) . They make a real TEL additive. They also make the TEL addidtive for MAXLEAD 2000 - it is just repackaged with a different label.

I have been using the TEL additive for two years - works great.
If you begin with 92-93 octane pump gas - blend about 1oz per gallon and the result is around 95-96 octane.

Do you remember way back when leaded pump gas would turn your exhaust pipes a white/beige color after driving for a while ?? The TEL additive (MAXLEAAD 200 or Lead Supreme) will do the same. The only issue I have is what type of lead scavenger is present in the TEL additive or todays pump gas. Without it, you will have lead deposits build in the combustion chamber, fouling plugs etc... I think they used to add sulfuric acid to the fuel to aid in scavenging the lead.

Anyways --
the TEL additive works great.
