Default First Winter With Vette

This will be my first winter with my 80 L-48. I would like to keep driving it right up until the first snow of the season. Should I be concerned with the cold weather causing cracks in the body. It can get pretty cold in this part of the country.

This is a production automobile. As such, it was made to be driven in all weather conditions. I drove my '81 'Vette (it was 1 year old at the time) all year in CT for 3 years with no ill effects.

(Then I moved back to Miami and it got stolen...)

I use my '77 all year round. There's one little crack on the hood--I think from when a model laid on it however.

Cold weather should not cause fiberglass to crack. I wouldn't worry. I drive mine here in NY until the first snow and it gets pretty cold here also. I have a few cracks in the paint but that is not caused by the cold.

I drive my '78 all year round in NJ. The body does make some noise on really cold days when I back it out of the driveway but that's all. Also contrary to the myth these cars are not too bad in the snow either. I've got caught a time or two. The weight distribution helps but you have to watch the clearance. I mostly worry about the other drivers and for that reason I prefer to park it when I can in bad weather.

-Pete. KEEP DRIVING!!!

I think it would have sounded better if you said " I think from when I laid a model on it."

Many years ago I drove my '74 through many winters. They are very good in the snow. How cold is pretty cold? Where I lived it could get very cold. I got into my one very cold day and the windsheild cracked. All the way across.

Thanks for everyones input. The weather here has actually been pretty warm so far this fall which makes for nice driving through the areas parks and taking in the fall colors. as someone said as long as the roads are dry (and salt free) I will be cruising.

I put mine away last Friday. It is not the cold that concerns me, but the salt dust on the road.

Oh well, she sleeps until April 1...

I share your cocern about the salt dust. Around here if it snows one inch they put down two inches of salt. The roads will have to be CLEAN for me to take the car out in the winter.

,but you're giving Michigan to much credit, its more "if there's a possibility of snow, 6-7 inches of salt will be laid overnight, just in case, and another 2-3 in the morning, just for good measure"
