Default Rear Spring Bushing Replacement ?

I replaced my rear spring bushings yesterday, went with stock length bolts and poly bushings. My questions for those who are more experienced than I is; How did you flair our bushing mounting cup that sits in the trailing arm frame? The metal on the cups was extremly hard to bend. I had to cram a piece of wood in the mounting bracket to hold the cup in place before I was able to make the flare with a hammer. I actually made a few small cuts in the part to be flaired to allow the metal to bend. It was a pain but I was finally able to get them to stay in the brackets. My flair job looks really crappy but it got the job done. Just looking for additional information in case I decide to replace the cups and do a more professional looking job. Thanks!

I don't think this is something you necessarily have to do. I flaired the cup on the spring side when I installed a new spring using a BFH and a ball-peen hammer.

The bolt wallowing around will do the flair for you after a few miles.

I took my new spring to a spring shop and had it done for me. If I knew they way they were going to do it (bfh and a ballpeen hammer) I would have done a better and faster job myself. When they got through it was loose and looked like hell. I got back to work and made it look as good as I could with a vice, bfh & ball peen.

On my 76 I was not concerned on flaring it. The existing one was good and it would have been a pain to remove it.
A short bolt with a nut that is ground with a bevel on one end should have worked.

I machined up a 45* steel cap and hammered it on the cup to flare it. I could have machined a shoulder into it to get it flat on the spring, but it's not going anywhere.

Flairing is not necessary. When all is assembled, they should stay set in place.
