looking at this '72 vette. really like it, including the color. BUT, as you can see, it is not an original color. How much does this affect the value??
Is it stock? If it has been modded so that it isn't a stock resto or survivor car, I don't see color making any difference. If it is stock except color, somebody who knows a lot more about Vette collectability than I do needs to chime in.
Was the interior redone with nos, oem, or repop pieces, or is it custom. A new interior would not disqualify a car from being a survivor. As old as c-3's are, I would expect an interior to have been worn out and replaced, maybe even more than once. One other thing to consider, is what kind of shape is the car in underneath? I don't know the price, and probably wouldn't know the value of a c-3 anyway; but so many cars as old as 1972 have had the electrical system butchered, or nice paint hiding all sorts of mechanical flaws. If the car is as nice underneath as it looks on the outside, I don't think a non-original paint color would reduce value very much or keep me from buying one. It is much harder to find something as old as a 1972 in top condition, than it is to worry about the wrong color.
On an all original Corvette with low miles I would take off what a new paint job would cost plus any other worn areas. On any other with mods I see no problem if you like the color. I base my idea of the right price on what the Corvrtte would be worth if it was perfect and how much it would cost to make it that way doing the work myself. In the end most people want to make it perfect so buy the best you can for the least money. If you don't know the difference you can pay big bucks for junk. Have a person who knows Corvettes look at it even if you need to pay him.
interior redone with oem. nothing custom, all original type(except stereo). I have arranged a couple of guys from the local corvette club to take a look at it with me, since I have never owned a vette, and don't know all the things to look for. I believe mechanically, it runs very nice. owner has redone all the u-joints, front end, brakes, and lots of other work. my only concern is the frame, as i did see some rust, but i'm assuming "some" rust is normal.
Is it a stock 72 covette color? How good is the paint job? If the paint is excellent, but the color is not original, would that be better than a bad paint job but original color? Maybe it is offsetting penalties.
The car was not originally fitted with sidepipes. The holes in the rear exhaust valence proves that. So there will probably be other parts that have been upgraded to, and the true originality of a total numbers matching car, which is where the high cost comes in, is not there.
So my opinion is that if this is a good paint job but not the original paint color, it probably would not hurt the value of this car too much.
