I would choose a fairly cheap head unit that does the job or just use an ipod or similar.
Good name brand amps and speakers will make the system. Cheapening on these gives muddy sound.
The head units specs are nearly all the same and just give you more toys to play with. Most have nothing to do with sound.
Don't be fooled by head unit amps, they lie.
Not to be restrictive but am happy with my Rockford amps speakers and the kicker speakers. Like I said any of the good name brand ones.
There are several threads on the subject you might want to check. Just to show what I shoe horned in. here
Oh- and it might be nice to draw out a schematic of the system after its installed, definately tag the wires. I tagged mine but didn't do the schematic and now don't know what goes where and have to draw one from the tags.
I am replacing the pathetic stock stereo on my 81.What is recommended for head unit, amp and speakers?Anyone got pics of speaker and amp installations?
Thanks... Barry
Depending on your budget, you can snag a replacement Instrument Cluster Bezel that allows mounting of standard DIN size head units. I've seen them at Ecklers and doubtless at other vendors as well. Nice for preservation-bagging your old bezel and running a standard DIN radio without chopping up any original parts.
Thanks guys. For 189.00 I would sooner cut up my own bezel!
Can the amp be mounted at the rear between the speakers on an 81 or will that be too close to the gas tank?
