Default Engine Serial Number

I just recently got my hands on a 73 coupe that I am going to rebuld and would like to know where the location of the engine serial number is. It's suppose to an L48 according to the cars VIN #. There are a few things that don't look just right about the engine I wanted to verify if the engine number matches the car VIN number.

The VIN should be stamped on the front of the engine block, on a small pad located just below the passenger side head, above and behind the water pump. It might be covered with gunk and need a good scrubbing to read.

Thanks marshrat99. Thats where I thought it was and there are some numbers and letters located there as two lines. Neither one of the lines of charcters/numbers make sense. One set is 9 characters long and the other is only 8 characters long. I thought the engine serial number was 11 characters long. The first 7 numbers should be the sequential production number followed by an F or T that says where it was made and then the next 3 characters gives the trans and carburator types. Am I wrong about this?

You should see only 13s then the last six numbers of the VIN 4XXXXX
The build date VXXXX no year then CKZ 4speed CLA auto unless it is a Calif. car. The carb. matches the three letter code.

Not sure I follow what you wrote so here are the 2 sets of numbers I pulled from the passenger side front of the engine block: V0524FRC CEF179423

Can you decipher the above?

I can tell you it is not the original motor installed in your 73.

The V (in V0524FRC) indicates that the engine was assembled
in Flint, MI. The 0524, indicates May 24 assembly. The suffix FRC
is a little confusing. The suffix was two digits up to about 1969.
Around 1970 the suffix changed to three digits (similar to yours).
However, the first character was usually a C (for car)......not F.

The second series of numbers (CEF179423) usually starts with a number (not a letter).
The number represents the GM Division.
The second character is also usually a number indicating year
of assembly. The third character indicates assembly plant. F usually
indicates Flint. However, your sequence starts with CE instead
of the two numbers. CE possibly = Crate Engine??
The last 6 numbers usually represent the last 6 numbers on the
vehicles VIN

I'm sure others on this forum will be able to shed more light on this
for you.
