Default trim tag help

Ok I looked at my trim tag and it says 19L and then 722. I know the 19 is black and the 722 is red leather, but what is the L after 19? BTW, I have a 79, and I did look in the black book but can't find any info on what the L is for. Thanks again for helping out a rookie.

GM had a system of coding paint colours on trim tags for 'two tone' cars. 'L' was for the lower half of the body, and 'U' was for the upper half. It's common to see cars with a single colour of paint to just show the 'L'.

Lots of people think it's L for laquer and U for urethane, pretty difficult to explain when you find both letters on the same trim tag!

My Mahogany 78's trim tag:
L = Lower or single color

L must be for single colors only. At least for St. Louis cars, two tones are designated as U for upper but the second color is designated as M for middle. Build sheets show that too. Don't know why.
Actually, just took a look, and my Pace Car build sheet shows: black lower(L), black upper(U), silver middle(M). Maybe because it starts out as a black car and is sprayed silver on the bottom.
Trim tag is 19U(black), 47M(silver).
Mike

Thanks again for helping on another quest for more info. I love the informative replies you get here. Right now I could spend weeks just digging up more info on my car. As my mom always says, you learn something new every day!
