totally legit and quite a piece of equipment. I have the older model, Gtech pro, which doesn't do as much... in fact I have 2 of them. Bought one for about $60 and got the second as a bf goodrich tire promo. It is an accelerometer, so it measues your acceleration, or "G-forces." If you tell it how much your car weighs it can figure out how much RWHP is being produced. If it measures the amount of G force being applied over time, it can figure out your speed as well, so it can give you 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times. Not sure how the new one gets rpm readings thru the power cord.
Pacin'California (Steve is his name) on the forum has one of the new ones, I have the older GTech Pro model.
Totally legit piece of equipment. Legit enough that other companies are making similar devices; Escort comes to mind: http://www.escortradar.com/gtimer.htm
While my C3 hasn't been tested, I've done extensive testing on my daily driven Rabbit with both versions; my old one and Steve's new one. Now a 1983 Rabbit GTi isn't much fun as far as pressing the small of your back into the seat, but it's an absolute hoot to test the lateral-Gs when you've got suspension modifications and Falken Azenis. I think I'm at or better than a C6 ZO6 in the lateral G department (1.04 consistant).
Regarding the new version and the RPM reading: When you set it up, the GTech Pro Competition (& SS/RR models) ask you to hold at a few RPMs and press one of its buttons. This way it knows where 3000 and 5000 RPM (I think those are the two) are in regard to the electrical surge.

How can that thing give you readings of your HP,TORQUE,0-60,ETC.......
by plugging into your cigarette lighter. They say it works on any car
Is this

I've got one of the GTech Pro Competition models; it's very accurate.
I used it out at Firebird Raceway, and it was accurate to within 2/10ths of a sec. for 1/4 mi. runs, was off by .05 mph for the runs...
As for reading RPMs, it reads it through electrical fluctuations on your cigarette lighter and actually is really neat..
However, if you're going to buy one, either buy a Pro Competition and upgrade the firmware for the Road racing, or buy an RR model. The RR will give you all of the same features as the SS, plus multi-car support. I actually really like this feature, since I use it to store data for my '67 Jaguar, the '74 Vette, and my '02 Saturn SC2 that I autocross with.
I use mine all the time, especially after mods. Much more accurate than seat of the pants. Great for 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times and speed. It will give you rear wheel horspower if you have an acurate weight measurement. I go to the local movers and weight the car/truck with me in and about a quarter tank of gas.
