Can anyone tell me how much a small block Chevy and Muncie 4 speed weigh?
I'm getting ready to pull the engine and tranny out of my '69 coupe and I realize that the engine crane that I bought is about 18 to 24 inches too short on the lifting beam to reach over the front end and lift somewhere near the center of the engine.
No problem, I can fabricate an extended lifting beam to fit into the crane, however, this will decrease the lifting capacity of the unit. I don't want to try lifting the engine/tranny if it's too heavy.
i just did the engine swap on mine last yr. and had the same problem. seems due to political correctness, and sue happy people, the lifts you can rent are shorter versions than they used to be.luckily a friend had an older one that i could use, but it still maxed it out as i had to put a kid on the back of the lift. later i found how simple it was to remove a tire and pull from the side. although my driveway/garage wouldnt have permitted this even if i had known. if you fab a beam, your gonna have to counter balance it.

Yeah. I've been thinking about that and along with the suggestions from you and others, about lifting from the side, I think I may go that route.
