was reading up on this last night and it seemed like a pretty nice addition to my otherwise stock 71BB... can someone explain to me in layman's terms what it actually does and if its its worth the investment..

Think of it as a spark booster - it amplifies the intensity of the spark so you can increase your spark plug gap. The result is a better fuel burn and quicker starting. The 6al also includes chips to prevent over-revving.

I've used them on several cars - very easy to install.

i have the dist., box and wires
easy install;tach drive unit so tach works
have done it to 3 out of 5 vettes i have owned
will do it to the 71 soon, best $500 spent
the NHRA boys only use MSD because it is the best
my .02

The 6AL box actually fires the plugs 3 times durung the combustion strocke below 3000 RPM. That's whas MSD stands for : Mutliple Spark Discharge..

As mentioned above, you can limit RPM's with it by using the different "pills".

look here ----http://www.msdignition.com/the difference is between inductive ignition (coil) or capacitive discharge (msd box)the msd can fire rapidly-the coil cant keep up upon high demand ,,multiple spark discharge= msd..look at the desplays they have set up at the speed shop
